GSoC Rust project concludes with alloc crate compilation

Final GSoC report details successful completion of alloc crate compilation infrastructure for GCC Rust, with contributions to CoerceUnsized support and testsui…

This is the final status report for a Google Summer of Code project focused on compiling the Rust alloc crate with GCC Rust. The project has successfully implemented the necessary infrastructure, including advancements in CoerceUnsized support for the Box type. The alloc testsuite has also been submitted, configured to synchronize with the core testsuite’s capabilities.

Submits the final status report for a GSoC project, summarizing achievements in compiling the Rust alloc crate with GCC Rust and expressing intent to continue contributing.

“At this point, I have addressed all the missing infrastructure required to support alloc. With my latest 3 pull requests (which are currently awaiting review), I have significantly advanced the CoerceUnsized support and successfully implemented this behavior for the Box type. Additionally, I submitted the alloc testsuite. It is currently configured to compile the crate up to the name resolution…”

In Details

This report concludes a GSoC project on integrating Rust's 'alloc' crate with GCC's Rust frontend (gccrs). The work involved implementing missing infrastructure, specifically enhancing support for CoerceUnsized to enable the Box type, and aligning the alloc testsuite with gccrs' current capabilities. This is a step towards full Rust standard library support within GCC.

For Context
alloc crate
The Rust standard library crate that provides memory allocation and collection types. Its compilation is a prerequisite for many other Rust crates.
GCC Rust (gccrs)
An implementation of the Rust compiler being developed as a frontend for the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).
CoerceUnsized
A Rust trait that enables coercing types with dynamically sized members, like Box<T>, to a representation that can be handled by the compiler.
testsuite
A collection of tests designed to verify the correctness of a software component, in this case, the Rust frontend of GCC.
